The four centuries old fortification network of the  Gran Castello is still surviving in a fairly good state of preservation since successive administrations have been investing in its restoration and rehabilitation throughout the past decades.

One of the most ambitious and successful projects was the restoration and reconstruction of the Polverista and protruding Battery adjoining the demi-bastion of St. John.  Unfortunately, however this site has never been made fully accessible to the general public.  Wirt Ghawdex thus offered its full support in its re-construction, rehabilitation and, most importantly, its presentation and management.

Wirt Ghawdex has entered into a Management Agreement with the Gozo Ministry to oversee the required works and to open it up to the general public and man it by volunteers.

The Gunpowder Magazine and the St. John Demi-bastion have been opened to the public free of charge since summer 2008. From May 2009 onwards, the silos were also opened to the public.
